First Brainstorm:
-What's your favorite movie?
-What's your favorite book?
How would you represent those with just one or two objects?
-Do you have a quote you love?
Here are some quotes I love. Could you represent them in a different way than are represented here?
-or-
Do we have any REALMS quotes we could represent in a poster and hang around the school?
REALMS beliefs or activities?
How could we represent things like:
-Confluence
-Travel Study (oooh! this could be fun. just a globe and a book?)
-Crew
-Etc.
Next Choose a Background Color and/or Texture
Here is a link to some nice background textures.
The most important thing with your background is Keep It SIMPLE. Less is more.
This is my favorite right now (A simple chalkboard)
Now Just Start Playing Around with your Ideas!
If you're adding text, you might like to know you can download lots of fonts for free. Here are some ideas. If you find one you like, do a google search and usually you can download and load it right into your Mac Fontbook. (I can show you how. Warning...Font searching can be addicting...don't spend too much time choosing!)
Want an extra challenge? Try some banner shapes to put your words into. (These are actually holiday drawings, but there are a bunch of awesome generic shapes here. I'll show you how to transfer them to your poster if you like. These techniques get pretty advanced, but if you want a challenge, you can add some more complicated shapes. Just remember not to go past "minimalist")
And Finally, Remember This!
This is important.
Not everything you do has to be entirely original. The best artists, composers, movie makers, photographers have borrowed ideas from other people. We call them "Influences".
Don't plagiarize.
Don't take someone's work and sell it.
But DO copy other people's ideas sometimes while you're practicing and building your own ideas. It's the best way to learn good design!
